Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the content of 11 DSM-III-R personality disorders(PDS). A 3-point rating scale of 150 preliminary diagnostic features of PDs was sent to psychiatrists, Each item in the scale was rated by 101
psychiatrists
for
prototypicality of characteristic features of every DSM-III-R PD. The result show that show that diagnostic criteria of PDs listed in DSM -III-R were, for the most part, rated as very prototypical to their DSM-III-R diagnosis. Some items were,
however,
not rated to be characteristic features for their DSM-III-R diagnosis. In most diagnosis, there was much in congruity between prototypicality scores rated by psychiatrists and the order listed in the DSM-III-R. Especially, there were few items
scored
enough to be used for diagnostic criteria of passive-aggressive PD. There were many non-DSM items among items scored high in this study. This result was compared with the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria in terms of characteristic features of PDs.
